Microsoft Excel, Microsoft’s premier spreadsheet product, has taken over the world of business. Other rival products have fallen by the wayside. We did shed a tear for Lotus 1-2-3 when it was discontinued a couple of years ago; it was one of our favourite products to train on in the 1990s. Excel though has gone from strength to strength with each version release.

At Blue Novation we have been training people on Microsoft Excel for over 20 years. Our Excel training courses are the most popular courses that we run, with demand increasing year on year. Many attendees come to us self-taught. They want to know how to “do things better, do things quicker”. Others reappear on courses on a regular basis as new program features are released and their job roles change and expand.

According to Steve Williams at Microsoft “with so many business functions now reliant on IT and the internet, Excel continues to be seen as a vital tool for administration and the effective running of a business”.

In other words, those that use Excel need to know Excel – and that’s why training is essential. With so much time being spent each day in the Excel environment, any tip or technique that shaves time off a task or highlights a more efficient method of working, will guarantee that the course will pay for itself.

Hints and Tips

For example, did you know the following Excel Selection shortcuts?

Ctrl+Arrows: Move to edge of section
Shift+Space: Select entire row
Ctrl+Space: Select entire column

Or that Excel 2016 includes a powerful new set of features called Get & Transform? Get &Transform provides fast, easy data gathering and shaping capabilities, letting you connect, combine, and refine data sources to meet your data analysis needs. Get & Transform is also used in Power BI, and in the Power Query Add-In available for previous versions of Excel.

These updates are available as part of an Office 365 subscription.
